MRS. DiBello'S CLASS
I am so blessed to be joining St. Ambrose this year and leading St. Maximilian Kolbe House! I will also be teaching 7-8th Language Arts (grammar and literature). This year, St. Ambrose students will continue to strengthen their grammar and literary skills, while showing their individual creativity allowing them to stand apart from their peers in other area schools.

I attended South County Technical for high school and graduated from UMSL in 2015 with a degree in Secondary Education/English. Go Tritons! I am certified in 5-9th and 9th-12th English Language Arts.

This school year, we focus on the virtue of compassion. As we cultivate this virtue, we must remember that wisdom, temperance, piety and joy all play a part in strengthening this aspect of our lives. As we work on the virtue of compassion, let us remember this verse from Colossians 3:12-17, "Therefore, as Godís chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."



MASS PARTICIPATION

Mass participation will be a separate grade category under Personal Responsibility on the report cards. The child can earn a G, S, N or U according to the criteria listed below.

G = consistent, audible singing and responses
S = consistent singing and responses
N = no responses and/or no singing
U = causes distraction and/or requires teacher redirection

HOMEWORK

When homework is assigned, it should be written in the student's assignment planner; however, I will also post the assignment on my bulletin board and calendar daily. The date posted by each assignment is the date in which the homework is due. Math homework will be assigned almost daily.

*** Grammar Homework***

Since grammar is a progressive subject, I will not accept late math homework. Each lesson builds upon the content from the previous nights homework and the preview page is designed to introduce the student to the next day's lesson. This helps build problem solving and critical thinking skills and cuts back on the time needed in class to review basic content that should already be mastered.

If a student is absent, I will follow the absent work policy (see handbook). The student must get their absent homework graded and report his/her grade to me before class on the day they return.

***Literature Homework***

I will follow the homework policy guidelines: one day late (at the time of class) will receive a 10% reduction. If the work is not completed and turned in on day two (at the time of class), the student will receive a zero. This policy does not pertain to students who miss class due to illness, family emergencies, or other excused absences; however, it is the STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY to turn in any absent/late work before or at the start of class. When appropriate, the assignment should be graded prior to class.

Having late/missing assignments will negatively affect a students effort grade and will be posted on his/her report card. The scale is as follows: 1-3 late/missing assignments will earn an S, 4-6 will earn an N, and 7 or more will earn a U. Please be aware that effort grades can affect a student's chance for Honor Roll.

***Neatness Policy***

Middle school teachers will specify if assignments are to be handwritten on loose leaf paper, shared on Google Drive, or printed.

All middle school assignments must meet the following requirements:
-Have a full heading
-Be completed on approved paper
-Be written in a legible manner using an appropriate writing instrument and style
-Written in complete sentences with correct grammar and spelling
-Organized in a neat and orderly manner
-Presented in good condition

Homework should be turned in or shared on time, and must also be legible. If assignments can not be read or are in a state of disarray, middle school teachers will not accept them and the student will earn a late grade. See the family handbook regarding neatness and late polices.

GRADING

I use a cumulative grade scale, where the grade will be determined by how many points are accumulated over the course of a quarter. This will be the same for Grammar and Literature.



I do try input grades almost daily (they will definitely be posted by end of day on Fridays). If your child is missing an assignment, there will be no grade in the grade-book along with a notation. These notations will identify whether the student was absent that day or if the homework is late. These notations are both for you to check on your child's progress and to help me remember why the grade is missing. If there is no grade and no notation, assume that I have not put in the grades for that assignment yet. If there is an "E" in the grade-book, your child has been excused from the assignment due to absence or other circumstances noted with the grade.

Participation

A participation grade for Language Arts will be given periodically. The students will earn an A, C or F. The student will earn an A if he/she comes to class with questions/comments and adds to class discussion more than once a week. The student must also be prepared for class with all of his/her materials and cause no disruptions or distractions. The student will earn a C if he/she comes to class unprepared, causes minimal disruptions, or makes a minimal effort to join in or comment on class discussion. The student will earn an F if I do not hear from him/her all week or if the student causes multiple or repeated distractions within the classroom.

I also watch closely during project work/ group assignments when students are working collaboratively. I expect all students to interact and interject their thoughts and ideas. We all can learn from one another.

REMINDER FOR BIRTHDAY TREATS
Please no soda or refrigerated items.
Treats should be store bought.
If the treat is brought for the house, it will be handed out during break.
If the treat is brought for the grade, it will be handed out during lunch.

PARENTS
If you would like to partake in a field trip or volunteer to help with your child's class, you must complete the Protecting God's Children Class.

Iowa Assessments start next week. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and has a good breakfast every day.
Every student needs to have at three sharpened #2 pencils ready to go on Monday morning.
If your child must miss school due to illness, we will do our best to make sure the tests are made up on Monday/Tuesday of the following week. A sick child does not usually perform well on tests.

FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL ONLY:
Middle school students are permitted to use calculators on certain portions of the Iowa Assessments. Please make sure your child has a working calculator at school.
