Jr. Confirmation Policy

Confirmation is a public rite of the Lutheran Church preceded by a period of instruction designed to help baptized Christians identify with the life and mission of the Christian community.

Prior to admission to the Lord’s Supper, it is necessary to be instructed in the Christian faith (1 Corinthians 11:28). The rite of confirmation provides an opportunity for the individual Christian, relying on God’s promise given in Holy Baptism, to make a personal public confession of faith and a lifelong pledge of fidelity to Christ.

In preparation for confirmation, catechetical instruction is offered by the congregation.
For young people attending parochial school, instruction is on a daily basis at the 7th and 8th grade.
For young people attending non-Lutheran elementary school, instruction is on a weekly basis at the 7th and 8th grades.

Questioning helps the church recognize those who are sufficiently trained in the Word of God and have made a profession of faith, and also are able to examine themselves for worthy reception of the Lord’s Supper.

Requirements for Junior Confirmation (normally at the 8th grade) include:

1. Baptized
2. Regular attendance of instruction classes including satisfactory completion of the following:
• Assignments
• Memorization of Bible passages, hymn verses, catechism parts and terms
• Taking of quizzes and tests
• Religion grade average of at least C
• Worship Reports (25 per year)
3. Regular attendance (more than 50% of the confirmation year) at Divine Services
4. Regular attendance (50%) at Sunday School or Bible class
5. Knowledge of basic content of the Bible including Testaments, Book names, and essential Bible Stories
6. Knowledge of basic doctrines including Law and Gospel, Justification and Sanctification, the 6 Chief Parts of Christian doctrine
7. Ability to make examination for worthy reception of the Lord’s Supper
8. Profession of faith (Faith Essay)

Chief source for class is the Holy Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism.
Other biblical and catechetical instructional materials such as work books may also be used.
Instruction is given by Immanuel's Pastors.

The rite of confirmation will take place on Palm Sunday each year. Examination in the home will take place before the Sunday immediately preceding Palm Sunday. A Faith Essay will be assigned to be read before the congregation at the late service the Sunday before Palm Sunday.

Consideration will be made for students with special needs and challenges in working toward completing requirements at their level.

Decision of successful completion is made by the Pastor.
