January Updates

Nightly Reading

To help form this habit and a love of reading, I have increased the nightly reading to 30 minutes every night. (If you have reluctant readers try 15 minutes, a break, and the last 15 minutes.) This is the ideal time to do reading for their book report! I will keep the weekend reading at 1 hour.

Book Report

For the month of January, we will be looking at biographies and autobiographies. Students should read TWO books about his or her chosen person. (Someone he or she has not studied before.) There are two possible due date, one for extra stickers, and one as the final chance to pass it in.

Extra Stickers Due Date: Friday, Jan. 26th Final Due Date: Monday, Jan 29th

(I will push the due date back if I feel we need more time.)

Students need to complete the following:
- Read 2 books on the same person.
- Complete the rough draft packet.
- Collect 20 facts they will use on a poster.
- Create a poster will have all of the facts.
- Be ready to tell the class their facts.

Posters

- Posters can be titled "Guess Who!" or "Who Am I?" (Please do not title the poster with the person's name. The person is a secret and will be hidden under a flap of paper for a big reveal.)
- Their posters needs to include the 20 facts written (or typed) in a size that can be read from a distance.
- Students will need a printed image of his or her person. (If you can't print at home, let me know so I can prepare something for your child.)
- Under the flap of paper, have the image of his or her person and the person's name.
- Make sure the work is neat and readable.
- Any large empty spaces are decorated in some way.

"I Survived..." Idea Contest

Scholastics is hosting an idea contest where students pitch an idea for the next "I Survived" book to the author. They need to choose a historical event and explain why it was important and the author should write that story. We will be working on this through January and February. I recommend going over ideas with your child, so they have ideas on what to research.
