If Students miss a day of instruction they should check Google Classroom to see what they can practice or if they missed any worksheets or Google forms to fill out. 4th and 5th grade now have practice videos and music for their recorders on Google Classroom. It would be great if parents would encourage their children to practice recorder (even for 10 minutes) a few times a week. I have included instructions on how to get to MUSICPLAYONLINE.COM This site has games to play to work on reading notes and songs to play for extra practice. Navigate to musicplayonline.com/ Login as- Click on "Student" (upper right corner) Enter the code In the text field, enter the code: d289639 On the left side of the screen go to "Instruments" then "Recorder" explore and find cool stuff to do. For students in 5th grade through 8th grade there is a grade associated with Music class that counts in the total gpa. This applies to 4th grade as well, but they do not receive a letter grade. Please note the following grading scale: Participation =50% Classwork = 25% Quizzes= 25% Definition of Participation- Student contributes positively to the culture of the classroom. Student raises hand to ask a question-student is quiet while others are asking questions Student refrains from shouting across the room- Student uses an "indoor" voice in class Student sings the song, plays the instrument, does the dance being taught Student handles instruments properly and with care Student stays on task during practice and review sessions Student shows effort and willingness to participate in activities Definition of Classwork- Any worksheets or in-class projects that are meant to assess student progress. Students should be focused on finishing worksheets. Some are graded- some are not. Students will be told when a worksheet is being graded. I rarely give homework. Definition of Quizzes- This relates to testing in a musical setting. If your student is playing the ukulele for a unit they should be able to play the chords or strings for that song or portion of the unit being assessed. If your student is playing the recorder they should be able to play the notes of the song. I am not looking for beautiful playing- Only that the student can do the things we have learned in class. The student may have to play the instrument alone or in a group. They are given the option. The score is based on a rubric with 10 points. Once a student can play the song we have been working on, they receive a colored rubber band (Karate Belt) to put on the bell of their instrument. Other quizzes are the traditional ones where students answer questions regarding the topic of the unit. I like to use google forms, but this could also come in the form of a slide to fill in the blanks or a physical piece of paper. This type of quiz could include how to play certain notes (draw the fingering) or chords (indicate where the fingers go), or how to strum a certain way (describe it) or articulate notes on the recorder a certain way (describe it). It could also be music theory, music history, or elements of music. Please encourage your child to practice their recorder at home. Although we don't have ukuleles to loan, students are free to come to my classroom and practice using a school instrument. The way to be successful in music class is to practice.
