I am Mrs. Lisa Cavanaugh and I am proud to be a part of the IC family!

I come to you with over fifteen years of experience teaching middle school, with the last three years working in the area of special education. I earned a BS in Biological Science from Saint Xavier University and a MA in Educational Technology from Concordia University.

My philosophy of education is that children learn best when they have the opportunity to make mistakes. When mistakes are made there is potential for growth and understanding. I believe that most homework, labs, and projects may be corrected, unless specifically indicated otherwise. This way, kids can learn from their mistakes, earning a feeling of pride and success.

In science, mistakes are made all of the time! When we understand what went wrong, we can figure out the "why" through hypothesizing and experimenting. This helps us understand the world around us.

Patience and respect are qualities that are important for success in school and relationships, as well as for personal growth. We can all exercise a bit more of each. I will try my best to exhibit both patience and respect and ask that my students try to do the same. I ask that we all respect ourselves, each other, and the learning environment. I pray for patience and respect each and every day.

When we fall short, sometimes a simple reminder or conversation is all that is required. However, when lack of respect is blatant, repeated, or if safety is an issue, parent contact may be made and/or demerits mat be earned.

My digital policy follows the IC rule that cell phones are not to be used during school, unless a personal request is made or a teacher has given permission. Similarly, classroom chromebooks are to be used for school-related use, unless permission has been granted by the teacher. Misuse of a digital device will result in loss of privileges and/or detention or demerit. A cell phone that is used without permission during the school day may be held until a parent comes to pick it up.

I like to have fun, and my hope is that students will also have fun in a safe learning environment. Let's work together to make this a great year, Cowboys!

Welcome to 2020!!

For our first full week of school, we will be freshening up our distance
measuring skills! Weather permitting we will head outside for some activities.

I see rulers were NOT listed on our supply list. I have around 15, which I can easily disinfect before and after each class, but if you have one at home and you don't mind your middle schooler taking it to class, that would be great! Please do not go out and buy one.

There should be very little homework this week, as long as the kids use their class time wisely. We still do not have our new science books, but are praying for them to arrive soon.
